What are Rocks?
Rocks are an indefinite mixture
of naturally occurring substances, mainly minerals. Their composition
may vary in containment of minerals and organic substances, and
are never exact.
How are Rocks Classified?
Rocks are classified into three main catagories. They are:
Igneous Rocks: Formed from
the cooling of molten rock.
Sedimentary Rocks: Formed
in layers as the result of moderate pressure on accumulated sediments.
Metamorphic Rocks: Formed from
older "parent" rock (either igneous or sedimentary)
under intense heat and/or pressure at considerable depths beneath
the earth's surface.
What is the Rock Cycle?
The rocks on Earth have been changed continually over time from
one rock type to another. This changing of rock is called the
"Rock Cycle".
